Thyristors - DIACs and SIDACs

Thyristors are solid-state semiconductor devices consisting of three layers of alternating P-type and N-type materials. This makes them ideal for use in power-control applications.The most basic thyristor is the DIAC, or diode-in-avalanche-triggered-capacitor. It is a two-electrode device, consisting of an anode and a cathode. This device works by connecting the two electrodes to a capacitor, and when a current flows through the anode, it triggers an avalanche breakdown, which causes a current surge through the cathode. While this current is limited to the amplitude of the input signal, the current that is generated is much higher than that from the signal.The second type of thyristor is the SIDAC, or symmetrically-activated-ivaldi-controlled-capacitor. This device is basically the same as a DIAC, except that the two electrodes are connected to both ends of a capacitor, so that the device can be triggered by applying a voltage to it. This allows for easier control of the current produced.The K2400EH70RP3 thyristor is a special type of DIAC with a maximum current of 70 mA, and a maximum voltage of 1200 V.
