KA78L12AZBU is a three-terminal positive voltage regulator designed primarily for series regulator applications. This device is designed to provide accurate current regulation and thermal, short-circuit and overvoltage protection features. It is available in an SOT-89 package with an adjustable output voltage from 1.5V to 15V and an output current of 1A.The KA78L12AZBU is a linear regulator which has been designed to provide protection and few external components when operated in series with the line voltage, as well as being able to provide other operational features. These features include foldback current limitation, thermal shutdown and over voltage protection, in addition to providing load regulation. The device also offers a low standby current of <1μA, which allows it to be used in battery powered applications.The KA78L12AZBU has an on-board power transistor which is used to limit the output current and prevent it from exceeding the maximum current rating of the device. The device also features foldback current limiting which is used to protect both the device and the load from excessive current, and to ensure that the device does not overheat. When the current reaches the foldback current limit, the regulator output voltage drops abruptly and a significant amount of dropout voltage occurs.The KA78L12AZBU also features thermal shutdown which is used to protect both the device and the load from excessive temperatures which can be caused from a prolonged overload condition. When the device temperature reaches its shut-down threshold, the regulator output voltage drops abruptly and the device shuts-down until the device temperature cools down to an acceptable level.In addition, the KA78L12AZBU provides over voltage protection which is used to protect both the device and the load from voltage transients which can occur due to external sources.
