WHAT IS KITMPR121EVM?
KITMPR121EVM is an evaluation board or kit designed to aid manufacturers and designers to evaluate and test a device called the MPR121 capacitive touch sensor. KITMPR121EVM evaluation kit is created by Texas Instruments to help engineers work on touch sensing projects and accurately implement capacitive touch sensing in devices.APPLICATION FIELD
The MPR121 is basically used as an interface device to control several applications in consumer and industrial electronics. This device supports up to twelve touch sensing channels which make it a perfect choice for capacitive touch sensing applications. It is ideal for smart appliances, wearables, and mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, phablets and even laptops.WORKING PRINCIPLE
The MPR121 capacitive touch sensor works on two principles; mutual capacitance and self capacitance. The principle of mutual capacitance makes use of the coupling of one electrode to another electrode when capacitance is applied between the two electrodes. The principle of self capacitance makes use of the capacitance varying upon the proximity of a conductive material and the electrode.The MPR121 capacitive touch sensor works in combination with two electrode rows; one receives the signal voltage while the other detects the variation in capacitance between two electrodes. When a proximity of a conductive material such as a human finger is detected on the sensor, a variation in capacitance is detected.The capacitive touch sensor works on a reference voltage. When the voltage drops below the reference voltage, the sensor interprets this as a touch. This is detected by the electrode array. The drop in voltage is monitored on a microcontroller, and the controller can decide to take certain actions based on the variation in voltage.KITMPR121EVM FEATURES
KITMPR121EVM is a compact evaluation board specifically designed for evaluating and testing the MPR121 capacitive touch sensor. The kit includes a single board microcontroller executed with 4-button touch sensor module and has a capacitive touch keypad with 12 keys.The board also features a dual-axis accelerometer, infrared transceiver and temperature sensor all of which combine together to provide the ultimate testing experience for quick prototype design. Furthermore, with USB based MyLaunchPAD device support, users can easily program the evaluation board and load it with pre-made software libraries. The evaluation board also allows developers to speed up their design process with the help of software tools available with the kit. This includes the Kinetis Design Studio software for developing and debugging embedded applications for Kinetis microcontrollers. Additionally, the on-board USB to UART bridge enables simple connection to a PC for debugging via the KDS. The evaluation board supports both the Windows and the Linux operating system.BENEFITS
