Thyristors - TRIACs
TRIAC (triode for alternating current) or thyristor is a three-terminal, solid-state semiconductor device that can be switched on and off with a current input. It is a three-terminal semiconductor device with three diodes arranged in a delta structure, most often referred to as an SCR (silicon-controlled rectifier). Each diode of the TRIAC is rated for the same maximum current and voltage ratings and are not connected in series, as are the two anodes of a SCR.
A TRIAC is an electronic device which has two gate terminals and three anode terminals. The two gate terminals control the forward current whereas the three anodes terminals provide a path for the current to flow. When a current is applied to the gate terminals, it will turn on the TRIAC and the current will flow from the anode terminals. A TRIAC is also called as a Bidirectional SCR or Quadrac, since it is capable of conducting current in both directions.
The L201E5 TRIAC is a general-purpose, low-leakage, light-load SCR which is designed to operate over wide ranges of Load and temperature. This device is available in standard TO-218 packages. It has a Vdrm rating of 200V, an Ig of 500mA and an Idrm rating of 1A. It has an on-state RMS current rating of 0.8A and an Off-state leakage current of 0.1mA. It is suitable for applications such as switching, power and heating control, motor speed control, AC switching and other similar applications.
The working principle of the L201E5 TRIAC is based on the principle of a negative feedback loop. A positive voltage is applied to one of the gate terminals, while a negative voltage is applied to the other gate terminal. This makes the transistor to turn on and off, controlling the current flow in the circuit. When the TRIAC is turned ON, current flows through the TRIAC, which then causes a voltage drop across the device.
