Thyristors - TRIACs
The L401E6 is a three terminal device,consisting of two thyristors connected in anti-parallel and a control gate that allows current to pass between the two thyristors.
Application Field
The L401E6 is a commonly used TRIAC. It can be used for AC current switching applications, such as in light dimmers and motor speed controls. It can also be used in low power AC heater controls, heaterless cookers, AC motor starters, reversing motor controllers and electrostatic precipitators.
Working Principle
The L401E6 is a three legged device, each leg is composed of two thyristors connected in anti-parallel. The gate terminal is connected to the middle of the two thyristors. The gate has the capacity to control the flow of current between the two thyristors. When a positive gate control signal is applied to the L401E6, it will turn on, allowing current to flow from the MT1 to MT2 terminal. The L401E6 will remain turned on until the current drops below the holding current, at which point the thyristor will turn off.
Once the L401E6 has been triggered into the on-state, the gate signal can be removed and the thyristor will continue to be in the on-state. This is referred to as latching and is an important characteristic of the L401E6. The device can also be turned off by applying a negative gate control signal. This is referred to as quenching and causes the thyristor to snap out of the on-state.
