Thyristors - TRIACs are semiconductor devices that are essentially switches used to control electric current. The L401E8 is a four-layer medium-voltage, planar, deep trench TRIACs with easily connectable control terminals. The working principle of a L401E8 TRIAC involves controlling power using a three-pole switch. When a current passes through two of the terminals, it activates the third. This is known as the main terminal, and can be used to control the switching of the TRIAC. The device has an internal gate which allows it to detect the voltage across the maint terminals and switch accordingly. When the main terminals reach a certain positive or negative voltage, it will turn on and stay on until the current is removed.
The L401E8 also features an accurately controlled on-state current regulation for high-peak load applications. This is done using two high-sensitivity diodes, one of which is connected in series with the main terminal to control the on-state current. The other diode can be connected in series with the control terminal, allowing for precise control of the on-state current.
The L401E8 can be used in a variety of devices, and its easily connectable control terminals make it ideal for applications in high-side and low-side switches, such as pumps and fans. Its wide operating temperature range, high peak operating power rating, and UL rating make it an attractive solution for many design requirements.
