The L4940D2T5-TR is an integrated, low-dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator from STMicroelectronics. The regulator is designed to provide cost-effective, high-performance fixed output voltage for a wide range of applications, such as audio pre-amplifiers, digital receivers, parallel data converters and digital signal processors.

The L4940D2T5-TR is a low quiescent current regulator featuring <2μA in Shutdown mode and 15mV dropout voltage at 2.5A load current. The device has an adjustable 2.5V to 5.5V output voltage range and programmable overvoltage protection up to 6.06V. The L4940D2T5-TR is offered in the thermally-enhanced 5-pin SOT-223 package.

Working Principle:

The L4940D2T5-TR voltage regulator works on the principle of controlling the output voltage by an internal error amplifier. The output voltage is determined by the resistor divider from the input voltage pin. The adjustable 2.5V to 5.5V output voltage range and programmable overvoltage protection up to 6.06V allow a variety of levels to be generated in different applications. The internal error amplifier senses and compares the output voltage with a reference voltage and covers the input voltage drop due to load current, thus providing regulated output. The regulated output voltage is regulated over temperature with a minimum dropout voltage of 15mV at a load current of 2.5A.

The device is designed to provide excellent thermal performance due to its thermally-enhanced 5-pin SOT-223 package and low quiescent current of 15μA. Its wide input voltage range of 2.2V to 6V enables the device to handle a variety of input voltage with ease.
