Linear voltage regulators are widely used in applications where a hot-swap, step-down or step-up operation is needed. The L4940V85 is the latest addition to STMicroelectronics’ portfolio of voltage regulators and has been designed to provide linear voltage regulation in a wide range of applications. The device is a versatile low-dropout regulator (LDO) that is designed to operate from input voltages up to 285V, and is capable of providing a constant output voltage with adjustable ±2% accuracy. Thanks to its low quiescent current of only 2mA, operation of the device can be automated and still provide minimal power consumption.

The L4940V85 is suitable for a variety of applications, including hot-swap and step-down or step-up power supply design, or for the protection of sensitive circuits and chip-on-board modules. It provides rail clamping protection, which makes it particularly suitable for automotive applications and power circuits, and provides adjustable current limit protection. The L4940V85 offers an additional auxiliary output, which can be used to generate an adjustable voltage. The device is available in four fixed output voltages, 5.0V, 3.3V, 2.5V and 1.8V.
