L4941BV Application Field and Working Principle

Working Principle of L4941BV

The L4941BV series of low dropout (LDO) voltage regulators are designed to manage power-supplies for small handheld devices and battery powered applications. The circuit works by using a voltage divider in order to proportionately reduce the input voltage to a level which is equal to the output voltage. The voltage regulator controls its output voltage using a feedback system. An error amplifier’s output is connected to the gate of a series pass transistor which alters the resistance of the pass transistor, thus altering the current flow from the input voltage source to the output load. With an optimal current flowing through the transistor, the output voltage will be regulated to the value indicated by the voltage divider.

The L4941BV series feature an integrated voltage reference (output voltage reference) and a series pass transistor whose impedance is adjusted according to the output voltage supplied from the reference. This provides a wide range of output voltages from 0.8V to 40V, depending on the output voltage reference used. The output voltage specification is signed to 3mA, so it can be precisely controlled; to achieve the specified output voltage, the series pass transistor is adjusted accordingly.

Protection features are available within the L4941BV series of LDOs to ensure safety and security. The over-current protection can be as low as 1mA and prevents damage to the circuit by shutting down the device when it detects an over-current. There is also over temperature protection which stops the device from operating if it becomes too hot.
