The L5980 is a monolithic step-down DC/DC switching regulator DC/DC converter designed onto STMicroelectronics’s VIPower M0-7 technology. It belongs to the PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) category, and more particularly to the portfolio of Voltage Regulators, DC DC Switching Regulators. The device utilizes synchronous rectification and Adaptive Voltage Positioning (AVP) technology to achieve an extremely high efficiency, significantly reducing the total power dissipation. It has in addition to these features a wide input voltage range, low power output, adjustable switching frequency and current limit for system flexibility.

The L5980 has a wide 4.5V to 44V input voltage range, while the output is adjustable from 0.8V to 30V with a maximum current of 5A (with a low-dropout voltage of only 0.2V). It has also a high efficiency up to 95%, programmable switching frequencies up to 1MHz, and a wide range of current limit settings. The output voltage and the current limit are both adjustable via an external potentiometer. The L5980 is also highly integrated, including a low-side power switch, an anti-ringing, over-voltage/short-circuit/under-voltage protection features, a load disconnect, and a thermal shutdown. This makes it well-suited for the applications demanding high accuracy and system stability like high power switching supplies and accuracy data converters.
