Introduction

The L5985 is a high efficiency, low voltage (LV) monolithic DC/DC synchronous, step-down switching regulator. With its switching of current levels in the conversion process, it is able to provide greater output current and power conversion ratios than linear devices, while providing additional protection, such as overtemperature, under-voltage and over-current, on-board. The efficiency of the converter can be improved with the use of low resistance power switches and synchronous rectification, thanks to its dual-channel output capabilities and integrated, independent current sense amplifier.

Working Principle

The L5985 uses a switched-mode power supply system to convert an input voltage to a lower output voltage. Internally, it is composed of a controller, several pass transistors, a feedback loop, an energy storage element (usually a choke network), and a few other components.At the start of the cycle, the control circuit activates the high-side MOSFET and turns on the input voltage. This initializes the pulse width modulated (PWM) control of the converter. The high-side MOSFET then alternates between the on and off states to switch the current levels of the input voltage. Current is delivered to the output by the inductor, while the current sense amplifier measures its levels and send feedback signals to the controller. These signals maintain the switching mechanism of current levels until the output voltage reaches its preset level. Once the output voltage reaches the desired level, the controller shuts off the high-side transistor and the cycle begins again.
