L5983 is a voltage regulator designed to provide a highly efficient DC-DC conversion between an input voltage of 4.5V and 13.2V, and an output voltage between 0.8V and 5.9V. It is part of STMicroelectronics’GreenFlex Technology, highly integrated DC-DC converters intended to minimize power losses and thus eliminate waste heat generation and reduce noise, enabling unparalleled energy efficiency, reliability, compactness and long battery life at the same time.
L5983 is especially suitable for applications that require wide input voltage range, low output voltage and high efficiency. Its main application field is for industrial control and monitoring, audio-video systems, network equipment and mobile battery-operated devices like mobile phones, GPS, Bluetooth and RFID tags, as well as gaming consoles, standard-based reference designs, digital cameras and portable audio/video players.
The main features of L5983 include high efficiency and very low noise. It can work with an input voltage range of 4.5V to 13.2V and an output voltage of up to 5.9V with an efficiency of up to 95%. Its switching frequency can be adjusted up to 1.2MHz and it can deliver up to 6A peak switch current. Other features include small footprint (TSOP-6, DFN16 and DFN8 packages), internal softstart, as well as protection features like input over/undervoltage, output overcurrent and overvoltage, and thermal protection.
L5983 is based on Buck topology, so its basic operating principle is the same as for all buck voltage regulators.
