Thyristors are a semiconductor switching device commonly used to control electrical power in motors, lights, or other electrical circuits. The TRIAC (Triode for Alternating Current) is a thyristor device that offers bidirectional alternating current control, meaning it allows current to flow both in the forward and reversal directions when a low-voltage trigger signal is applied to it. The L6006L6 is a six-pin TRIAC that is frequently used in electrical control systems for applications such as motor speed control, heater control, over-voltage protection and over-current protection.
The L6006L6 is a zero-gate voltage (or latching) TRIAC, meaning it does not require an external gate signal to maintain its on state. It is also a zero fired turn-off TRIAC so it automatically turns off when the current drops to zero. This device is used in applications with peak blocking voltages up to 600V and RMS on-state currents up to 6A. It has a maximum on-state voltage drop of 2.1V at 6A and a maximum turn-on voltage of 1.5V at 6A.
When the L6006L6 is in the off state, no current flows through it. When the switched voltage reaches the low-voltage trigger signal level, current in the form of a gate trigger current (or “trigger current”) will flow through the gate lead to the gate pin and to the anode. This triggers the device to go into the on state by forming a low resistance path between the anode and cathode. Since the most common application of TRIACs is to switch AC voltages, this low resistance path typically has a resistive value that is less than the AC voltage supply being applied to the device.
When the TRIAC is in the on state, current can flow through the device in both directions. This means the TRIAC is effectively creating a single-pole, double-throw switch. By controlling the time at which the TRIAC is triggered, the power to anyloads connected to the device can be adjusted. This ability to precisely control power to the load makes the TRIAC one of the most widely used electrical control devices.
The turnoff of the TRIAC is controlled by the current flowing through it. When the device is in the on state, if the current is above the minimum “holding current”, the TRIAC will remain on. When the current goes below the minimum holding current, the device will turn off. This minimum holding current is typically about 1 to 2 mA for the L6006L6 TRIAC.
The L6006L6 TRIAC is a versatile device that can be used in a variety of applications such as controlling power to lighting, motors, heating elements, and other electrical circuits. It allows precise control of the current and allows AC voltages to be switched with great accuracy.
