Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) is a type of integrated circuit (IC) designed for managing and controlling power in several applications with high efficiency. As general PMICs, Gate drivers, as one of the PMICs, are used for controlling the switching operation of transistors, such as for switching high voltage, high current power dissipated in power converters. L6571A is a high-efficiency three-phase gate driver composed of a tri-level output stage, with bootstrap configuration and dedicated active-clamp circuitry.

In general, the L6571A has a specialization in the applications that are subjected to some sort of fault detection to ensure safety, such as three-phase motor drives, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs), inverters, and induction cookers. In addition, it is suitable for solar and wind power control, automotive engine control, brushless DC (BLDC) motor control, and high-performance AC motor drives. The higher efficiency, easier implementation, and reduced board space required by the L6571A are the main reasons why it can offer a wide range of applications in many areas.

The L6571A gate driver has an adaptive high-frequency point, shut-off time, On-period, and off-timing, with soft start control for reducing high-inrush currents to reduce switching losses in the power switch structures. Furthermore, it has built-in overvoltage protection and integrated output short-circuit protection to keep the load device within its safe operation limits. It also provides a reset input to reset all parameters on the rising edge of the RESET pin. This capability helps to control the power provided to a power stage in the event of abnormal occurrences.

The working principle of the L6571A is composed of two primary stages, the driving stage and the discharge stage. The driving stage controls the transistor turn-on and turn-off process for the output stages. This stage is composed of the PWM sensing and the Gate driver stage, which is interfaced with the outputs. During the turn-on cycle, the PWM signal is used to charge up the bootstrap capacitor and to increase the voltage seen on the gate of the switch. Once the voltage on the switch gate reaches the threshold, the switch will turn on. During the turn-off process, the PWM signal is used to discharge the bootstrap capacitor, reducing the voltage on the switch gate until the switch is turned off. The discharge stage is responsible for discharging the bootstrap capacitor when the PWM signal is inactive. This stage consists of the active-clamp section, which is interfaced with the outputs, where the active-clamp circuit will start discharging the bootstrap capacitor until the reference voltage gets below a certain level.
