L7981 Application Field and Working Principle
The L7981 is a high-integration DC-DC converter buck regulator suitable for low-voltage, high-power applications, such as automotive, telecom, energy-saving lighting, industrial computers, volume customer and home appliances. Its intelligent power management system allows various complex design applications and can replace complicated discrete circuits.The L7981 is composed of a pulse width modulation (PWM) controller and a low on-resistance power MOSFET. It remains in Off-state and low quiescent current mode when the output current is small. The circuit is capable of switching to On-state and high frequency pulse width modulation mode with only small-signal oscillation when output current increases slightly. The power MOSFET works in a voltage-mode control, and the output voltage is stable and accurate.The L7981 is utilized in two major power supply circuits: synchronous rectification buck converter and step-down converters. In synchronous rectification buck converter, the high-side power MOSFET is to rectify the output voltage of the secondary inductor, which provides high efficiency and reduces noise. In the step-down converter, the low-side power MOSFET conducts while the high-side power MOSFET is turned off, and the output voltage is dependent on the duty cycle.In synchronous buck converters, the output voltage is regulated by adjusting the switching frequency and duty cycle of the high side power MOSFET. The L7981 can work with a voltage range of 2.6V to 28V and provides a good efficiency at high frequency operation. With the advanced high current self-oscillating PWM scheme, the device can reach up to 95% efficiency. It also has a lowripple voltage, regulated output voltage and low EMI (electromagnetic interference).The L7981 is designed with a variety of protection functions, including over current protection, short circuit protection, thermal shutdown and over temperature, to ensure safe working conditions.
