L7986A is a pulse width modulation (PWM) Switching voltage regulator based on the Voltage Mode Control (VMC) architecture. It is suitable for boosting, bucking, and Inverting DC-DC applications. This IC is capable to deliver up to 2A with an output voltage of 3V to 40V.The main features of the L7986A include an adjustable power switch frequency up to 1.5MHz with an external switching oscillator, an enable pin, and a differential amplifier to optimize switching performance. The device also has a sense pin mode that enables high-side sensing and output current limiting with adjustable temperature coefficient. typically the device is used to supply a high voltage to the power supplies of electronic appliances, such as Personal Computers (PCs) and LCD televisions. It can also be used in applications such as DC-DC converters, motor drivers, switch mode power supplies, DC-DC buck-boost converters.The working principle of L7986A involves the feedback control of pulse width modulation (PWM) to regulate the desired output voltage. The L7986A has two internal 500kHz oscillators, a slow OSC1 and a fast OSC2, allows for adjustable output voltage adjustment up to 1.5MHz. The OSC2 is used for controlling the switching frequency of the power switch which is used for the Buck Boost Converter.When AC power is applied, the L7986A starts switching the power switch. The switching of the power switch allows the input current to flow to the output of the buck boost converter. This converts the AC voltage to a DC voltage as per the selected output voltage. The output voltage is compared with the voltage reference and fed back to the modulation pulse-width control block. This block controls the pulse width modulation (PWM) applied to the gate of the power switch. Based on this feedback control, the pulse width is adjusted to maintain the desired output voltage.The L7986A also has a sense pin which can be used for current limiting and high-side sensing. The current limit and temperature coefficient can be adjusted with the use of external components. The device also has an enable pin which can be used to turn on and off the device.
