L7985ATR is an integrated DC to DC converter designed for applications with low output current and low stand-by power consumption. It has a switch mode power supply with an on-chip linear regulator, allowing the output voltage to be appropriately tailored for a wide range of system configurations. Operating from an input voltage of 4.5V to 28V, the output voltage can be adjusted externally to any voltage between 0.8V and 24V, with low ripple noise and a maximum output current of 3A.

The L7985ATR integrated power converter includes an internal high side N-channelNmosfet, which allows for an efficient current transfer from input to output. High side supply tracking features, an adjustable soft-start function, a fault protection circuit, and precision current limit and thermal shutdown functions ensure reliable and continual operation.

The key characteristics of this integrated solution are its low quiescent current consumption, the regulated output voltage, and its extremely low number of external components and board area required, making it highly suitable for applications where space and power consumption are at a premium.

Working Principle

The L7985ATR DC/DC converter employs a synchronous buck switching topology, in which an N-channel power MOSFET is connected in series between the input and output circuitry, with the output connected across the drain and source of the MOSFET.

A control loop modulates the duty cycle of the switching MOSFET, so that the average output voltage is a predictable multiple of the average input voltage. By adjusting the duty cycle, the average output voltage is adjusted, allowing for precise voltage control.

Voltage loop compensation is accomplished by adding a capacitor and resistor to the external circuitry. This provides a frequency dependent gain to the compensation network, allowing for extremely fast and precise transient response.
