The LD1086VY is a series of adjustable and fixed 3-terminal low-dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulators designed for Low voltage (1V to 25V) applications. This series is well suited for use as direct replacements for standard 78XX series regulators. It also finds application in other low-voltage, high current circuits. Application Field
The LD1086VY linear voltage regulators can provide up to a maximum of 5A of continuous output current and typically have a dropout voltage of 0.9V at full load. They also have low quiescent current, fast transient response, and excellent line and load regulation. The LD1086VY series is a good choice for applications such as embedded system power supplies, 5V/12V/15V line powered systems, battery powered systems, automotive lighting systems, and automotive ECU power supply. Working Principle
The LD1086VY is an older version, but it is still one of the most widely used linear voltage regulators in the industry. The principle of its work is quite simple and is suitable for working with DC input power sources. This is a linear voltage regulating device which, given a constant voltage drop of 0.9V to 1V, is capable of supplying up to 5A at its output, given enough input voltage and proper circuit sizing. The internal circuit consists of an error amplifier, which is used to compare the reference voltage to the output voltage and to generate a corrective signal. The corrective signal is then amplified and applied to the base-emitter circuit of the pass transistor (which is often an N-MOSFET transistor), which, in turn, provides the current necessary to keep the output voltage constant.
The output voltage of the LD1086VY series is regulated precisely within ±1.5% by using external resistors, which can be changed as needed to get the desired output voltage. Furthermore, it features output voltage protection and thermal shutdown protection. Basically, the thermal shutdown protection is triggered if the power dissipated in the chip gets too high, shutting down the regulator until the temperature drops below a preset threshold.
