Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are polarized, very compact, and high capacitance capacitors that can store large amounts of energy. They consist of two aluminum electrodes, a rolling sheet aluminum anode and a rolled sheet aluminum cathode, each covered with an anodizing layer. The gap between them is filled with an electrolyte and is sealed in a cylindrical metal can. These capacitors are mainly used as power supply filters and timing, as they have very low ESR (equivalent series resistance).

LGL2W221MELB25 Application Field and Working Principle

The LGL2W221MELB25 is a Radial Lead Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor, from the LGL series produced by SANYO-Denki. It is suitable for use in low-frequency circuits, DC and AC motor drives, power supplies, and other general-purpose applications. Its working principle is based on the principles of electrolytic capacitors, where an electrical current is used to store energy between two electrically conductive and non-conductive surfaces. The capacitor has a high level of electrical capacity, and as current passes through it, it creates and stores a negative charge on the anode and a positive charge on the cathode.

The main components of the capacitor are the two aluminum elements, a rolled aluminum anode, and a rolled aluminum cathode, and an electrolyte. The electrolyte contains two components, one that carries the electrical current, such as an anionic electrolyte, and a second component, such as a solvent or salt, that allows the current to remain stable in order for the capacitor to function properly.

The construction of the capacitor has an anode that is insulated and protected from the cathode with a thin layer of oil, typically made of high-viscosity silicone oil. This layer of oil prevents the current from migrating between the two cells.
