Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors are a type of capacitor which utilizes an electrolyte as one of its plates to stored electrical energy. LGUW6101MELA is an electrolytic capacitor that belongs to this category. It is an axial type, miniaturized, low impedance, and long life capacitor.
The LGUW6101MELA application field includes telecommunication equipment and computer motherboards, miniaturized high frequency circuits, and measuring equipment. This capacitor has a rated voltage of 63V and a capacitance of 10uF. The design is glass sealed and with an Operating temperature range from -55 to 105C.
The principle of a capacitor involves the storage of electric charge when a potential difference is applied between two conductors separated by a non-conducting layer. This is achieved thanks to the voltage across the plates which creates an electric field. The potential difference causes a charge separation and the negative and positive charges accumulate on the plates. The more charge deposited on either plate, the more the capacitance increases.
Aluminum electrolytic variety of capacitors operate on the same principle except that one of the plates consists of a layer of aluminum oxide which is an insulator. In the case of the LGUW6101MELA, the aluminum oxide film is formed on the anode or positive side of the device. This means that the capacitance can be changed by changing the thickness of the oxide film. The construction of this type of capacitors is based on a rolled anode which is dipped in a paper that soaked in a liquid electrolyte. The electrolyte acts as current conductors and allow a charge to travel along it.
The advantages of aluminum electrolytics over other capacitors involve their high capacitance in a small size and it longevity. Additionally, the oxide layer acts as a dielectric, and this is convenient when one needs stability from high voltage. Finally, because of the oxidation process, this type of capacitors are able to handle high level of electric currents.
