Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are a type of polarized capacitor which uses an aluminum oxide as one of the electrodes. An electrolyte, either liquid or wet, is used as the medium between the electrodes. Due to their high capacitance, low cost and wide availability, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are among the most commonly used capacitors.

The LKS1H123MESC aluminum electrolytic capacitor is a single-ended capacitance product manufactured using etched aluminum foils and thick-film dielectric/electrolyte. With a U-shaped construction, this product is designed for space-saving use in applications such as voltage step-down power supplies, portable and home electronic equipment, and automotive electronics.

Regarding its anatomy, the LKS1H123MESC consists of an aluminum foil for the anode and cathode, a special paper soaked with electrolyte, a case to contain the electrodes, and a sealing material to cover and protect the electrodes. The anode and cathode each comprise two etched aluminum foils which are thin compared to the physical size of the capacitor. An electrolyte layer is soaked in a special paper and wraps around the aluminum foil. The paper is then twisted to wrap around the impressed aluminum foils. The assembled anode and cathode are then inserted into the case and the sealing agent is applied on top of the capacitor.

The working principle of the LKS1H123MESC is based on the reverse flow of electricity along the electrolyte-filled paper layers. When a positive voltage is applied to the anode and a negative voltage to the cathode, electrochemical action takes place which induces an electric charge on the electrodes. This results in an accumulative electric inductance between the electrodes and thus forms an electrical field between them.

The capacitance of a capacitor is inversely proportional to the distance between the anode and the cathode. To increase the capacitance of the LKS1H123MESC connector, the distance between the anode and cathode is made smaller by twisting theImpressed Foil Anodeand Cathode electrodes together.
