An electric current is passed through the liquid electrolyte solution and produces a small electrical charge on the anode. This electrical charge accumulates instead of flowing away. The electrolyte then reacts with the aluminum anode, forming a formation of a metal oxide layer on the surface of the anode, called the oxide layer. This oxide layer acts as an insulator and creates a barrier to the electrons on the anode.When a voltage is applied to the aluminum electrolytic capacitor, a charge is created on the anode and the electrons migrate, or move, to the cathode. The idea behind the aluminum electrolytic capacitor is that the charge can be stored and regulated for a longer period of time than with other types of capacitors. The anode layer breaks apart into smaller particles creating a greater surface area for the charge to be stored.
