LM20123MHX/NOPB Application Field and Working Principle

The LM20123MHX/NOPB is a family of adjustable and current mode buck DC-DC switching regulators from Texas Instruments. These products provide improved power efficiency, low noise output, wide input voltage range, and excellent load and line regulation.

LM20123MHX/NOPB is part of the cost-effective highly integrated SMARTMOS™ family of buck DC-DC switching regulators. With an integrated low-side MOSFET and bootstrap diode, the device can operate from an input voltage range of 4.5 V to 24 V and provide a regulated output voltage with a maximum output current of 4 A over a wide input voltage range. The device can achieve up to 91% efficiency under light loads and 92% efficiency at moderate loads making it suitable for portable and low-powered systems. It can operate at switching frequencies up to 2.2 MHz, allowing the use of small external components. With a 3.2 mΩ MOSFET, the device can be programmed for output voltage of 0.9V to 11V to support a variety of power requirements.

The device has three modes of operation: pulse width modulation (PWM) mode, burst mode operation (BMR), and pulse frequency modulation (PFM) mode. In each mode, the LM20123MHX/NOPB can be programmed to provide a non-over-voltage protection and soft-start at start-up. The device also has a low quiescent current of 10 uA in power down mode and a high switching frequency of up to 2.2 MHz with a full load; making it suitable for applications such as high-power USB ports, point-of-load DC fans, and low-power motors.

The LM20123MHX/NOPB features an adjustable output voltage from 0.9V to 11V which can be programmed with a single external resistor. Also, an external soft-start feature can be programmed with an external resistor and capacitor, allowing for a gradual start-up. An external resistor and capacitor can be used to set the switching frequency up to 2.2 MHz, allowing for small component sizes.
