Working Principle

The temperature sensor works on the principle of resistance to temperature. The sensor consists of a stainless steel casing, a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor, a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor, and an analog or digital output.The sensing element in the temperature sensor is the PTC thermistor. This is an electrical resistor which is made from ceramic materials with a high resistance to temperature. When the temperature rises, the PTC thermistor’s resistance increases in direct proportion to the temperature. This will cause a change in the output voltage from the sensor. The NTC thermistor works on a similar principle and operates inversely to the PTC thermistor. When the temperature drops, the NTC thermistor’s resistance increases in an inverse proportion to the decrease in temperature. This will also cause a change in the output voltage from the sensor. The LM20BI sensor will generate an analog or digital output depending on the application. The analog output is usually in the form of voltage or current depending on the type of sensor used. The digital output is usually in the form of digital signals which are processed by the micro controller of the system.
