Evaluation boards, and specifically the DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS, are essential for understanding the function and application of power management devices, and the LM20323EVAL is a perfect example of this. The evaluation board is designed to be an easy-to-use platform for the LM20323E 3A controller, and combines the controller, a resistor, and a diode to form a typical Flyback converter. The boards as a whole are used to develop, evaluate and characterize offline AC/DC converters, such as laptops\' AC adapters, CFL- and LED lighting, and many other applications.
The working principle of the LM20323EVAL is straightforward, and works by taking alternating current to direct current first by means of a specific power converter topology known as the Flyback Converter. A transformer is the core component of the Flyback Converter, and is responsible for both isolating the main line voltage and transferring power to the output. The transformer receives power from the main line, and stores it temporarily in its magnetic field before it is transferred to the output stage, which then regulates the current through the resistor to be equal to the desired value. Additionally, the shunted diode is used to smooth the waveform, as natural feedback mechanisms ensure that the output voltage remains stable.
The LM20323EVAL is capable of controlling a wide range of input voltages- from 90V to 265V. It is important to note that for high voltage supplies, the LM20323EVAL must be shunted properly in order to ensure safety. Moreover, it features a peak current mode control scheme, brownout protection, built-in proprietary valley current control, overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, and thermal shutdown.
The LM20323EVAL is ideal for applications such as external power supplies, LED drivers, active PFC and lighting applications. The evaluation board measures 146mm x 95mm and has components clearly labelled for easy use, including easy to use terminals for output power monitoring. The integrated Vin and Vout binding posts support a maximum of 10A, 10V, and 1000V, respectively, and both on-board digital interfaces available (USB, RS232, and RS485). Furthermore, it includes 3 easily accessible test points for monitoring VFB, PWM output, and Ipk. All components are pre-assembled and housed in a custom made ABS enclosure.
The evaluation board and the accompanying software enable designers to develop, evaluate, and characterize offline AC/DC converters. The LM20323EVAL offers a simple, comprehensive, low-cost solution for controlling a wide range of power switch converters. Its easy to use design allows for quick load testing, as well as accurate and repeatable measurements. The evaluation board is the perfect solution for evaluating power supplies, LED drivers, and many other offline AC/DC power converters.
