The LM311N/NOPB Linear-Comparator is a general-purpose monolithic comparator specially designed to operate from dual or single power supply voltage levels. It is easily interfaced with both analog and digital systems. This device will demand a low space and low power consumption making it suitable for use in many applications.
The LM311N/NOPB has two separate inputs that allow for comparison of two different signals. These two inputs are separated by an input differential of more than 15kΩ. Inputs operate in ground, common-mode voltage range of 0V to +7V (in dual supply configuration) or 0V to VCC (in single supply configuration) and it has wide power supply configuration.
It also includes an internal hysteresis that helps to avoid bouncing conditions when the input signal is close to the reference signal level. This hysteresis can be adjusted by altering the values of resistors connected to the hysteresis port, making it great for signal conditioning or as a level detector.
The outputs of this device are capable of driving up to 25mA of current, and the output low state is compatible with most TTL logic families. It can operate over an ambient temperature range of 0°C to + 70°C, making it suitable for many diverse applications.

The working principle behind the LM311N/NOPB Linear-Comparator can be easily understood. The device compares two input voltages – V1 and V2 and determines whether V1 is greater than, less than, or equal to V2.
