The LM311PWG4 is an advanced monolithic linear comparator from Texas Instruments. This device combines an integrated circuit differential amplifier and an output stage that is capable of driving a wide range of loads. While being functionally identical to Texas Instruments\' classic LM311 solution, the LM311PWG4 also offers improved properties, such as higher frequencies, tighter manufacturing tolerances, higher power output and lower voltage requirements. This makes the LM311PWG4 suitable for both industrial and consumer applications.

The LM311PWG4 belongs to a family of linear-comparator devices, which are used extensively in logic circuits. Most logic circuits have two states, binary 0 and binary 1, but Linear Comparators are capable of representing multiple states. They are usually used in combination with two different input signals that are measured with respect to a reference voltage and compared to each other. An output is generated in the form of an open-collector N-channel MOSFET and is used for controlling other circuits.

The LM311PWG4 is designed for precision applications in which a reference voltage is needed for comparison. It features a high-immunity reject-noise circuit and an improved offset voltage. The LM311PWG4 has a guaranteed maximum output saturation voltage of 300mV, which allows it to interface with CMOS logic, while its power dissipation of 11.9mW ensures that it is able to generate enough power to drive a wide range of loads. The LM311PWG4 also features a matching delay curve and very low propagation delay of only 16ns.

The LM311PWG4 operates in four different modes, depending on the application. In the first mode, A0 & A1 can act as an inverting input while A2 & A3 act as the non-inverting inputs; this mode provides a high output voltage. In the second mode, B0 & B1 act as the inverting inputs while B2 & B3 act as the non-inverting inputs; this mode provides a low output voltage. In the third and most commonly used mode, A0 & B1 act as the inverting inputs, while A2 & B3 act as the non-inverting inputs; this mode provides an open-drain output voltage. The fourth and final mode is the most versatile, it allows A0 & A1 and B2 & B3 to be used as the inverting and non-inverting inputs, respectively; it also provides an open-drain output voltage.
