The LM317H/NOPB is a voltage regulator integrated circuit that can adjust output voltage anywhere between 1.2v and 37v. It is a part of a series of adjustable three-terminal regulators that can provide an output voltage as low as 0V for high current applications. The LM317H/NOPB is designed to meet the needs of industrial, medical, computing, and communications markets by providing very precise, stable adjustable output voltages with its wide selection of package types.

The LM317H/NOPB is a monolithic integrated circuit in a TO-220 package that consists of two voltage reference circuits and a high-gain output amplifier, featuring a temperature compensated reference and an improved output drive of 50mA to 150mA. It has an extremely low temperature coefficient range and an exceptionally low-temperature drift across its operating temperature range. The LM317H/NOPB also features very low project success rate and cost to implement making it popular amongst novice and advanced circuit designers.

Application Field

The LM317H/NOPB is part of a series of voltage regulators that are used in applications requiring an adjustable regulated dc power supply. These applications include regulated low voltage supplies, and adjustable current limiting circuits. It can also be used with switching supplies and linear regulators, as well as in a positive- or negative-polarity, single or dual power supply configuration without having to design a power supply from scratch.

Working Principle

The LM317H/NOPB works by comparing the input voltage to the output voltage. Using a series of voltage references, the LM317H/NOPB adjusts the output voltage to meet the comparison value. When the output voltage is greater than the input voltage, the LM317H/NOPB will decrease the output voltage. Conversely, when the output voltage is less than the input voltage, the LM317H/NOPB will increase the output voltage. This gives the IC the ability to smoothly adjust the output to the desired value without oscillating, as long as the adjustment pin is not loaded with capacitance or exceeding current access.

The LM317H/NOPB features a wide temperature range and low quiescent current of 29µA. The low quiescent current ensures that the IC does not waste power and the wide temperature range ensures that the IC can operate in all environmental conditions. The device also features an adjustable current limit of 2A to 50A and a maximum power dissipation of 1.5W.

In order to operate the LM317H/NOPB, a single resistor or potentiometer is placed between the output and the adjustment pin. When the output is adjusted, the resistor or potentiometer is used to set the voltage at the adjustment pin and this voltage is compared to the reference voltage of the IC. This causes the output voltage to be adjusted accordingly.

The LM317H/NOPB is a very versatile voltage regulator that is used in many applications due to its ability to precisely regulate output voltages, wide temperature range and low power dissipation.
