LM317KCSE3 Application Field and Working Principle
LM317KCSE3 is a 3-terminal adjustable voltage regulator, which belongs to a type of linear voltage regulator IC. It is able to provide a constant output voltage of 1.25V to 37V with a maximum output current of 1.5A. It features a wide input voltage range of 3V to 40V and has a low dropout voltage, which allows it to maintain a steady output voltage with low current consumption. It has a temperature stability of 0.01%/°C and improved load regulation over the LM117/LM317. LM317KCSE3 also offers protection from reversed load connection, current limiting, thermal shutdown and short circuit protection. With these features, it is designed for use in pre-regulators, battery chargers, positive voltage regulators and many other applications.The working principle of LM317KCSE3 is quite simple. The IC has three terminals with two input terminals, VIN and GND and one output terminal VOUT. VIN is the voltage supplied to the IC, and GND is the ground line. The output terminal VOUT will provide a constant output voltage, which is adjustable by an external resistor network connected between VOUT and ADJ pin of the IC.When the voltage is supplied to the VIN pin, it will be applied to the internal voltage regulator circuit, which consists of a series pass element, error amplifier, and reference voltage. The series pass element is the MOSFET, which acts as a switch for the voltage regulator. The MOSFET is connected to a voltage divider and the reference voltage. The main purpose of this voltage divider is to provide an adjustable voltage to the internal MOSFET, which can be adjusted by an external resistor. The output voltage is determined by the reference voltage, and an error amplifier ensures that the output voltage is kept constant by comparing it to the reference voltage.
