LM317LMX/NOPB Application Field and Working Principle

The LM317LMX/NOPB is a member of the popular LM317 family of linear voltage regulators, commonly referred to as PMICs (power management integrated circuits). The LM317LMX/NOPB is a three-terminal adjustable regulator with a wide operating range, low output noise, superior thermal performance, and low input and output voltage dropout. These features make the LM317LMX/NOPB an excellent choice for applications requiring low input voltage, low output voltage, and low output power. Its adjustable output voltage (VOUT) makes it ideal for many applications such as DC-DC converters, voltage stabilizers, switched-mode power supplies (SMPSs), and battery chargers.

The LM317LMX/NOPB operates as a constant current source. It has two terminals, the output (VOUT) and the input (VS). When a voltage is applied between the two terminals, the LM317LMX/NOPB measures the difference between the two voltages and adjusts its current output to cause a constant current to flow from the input to the output. The current is determined by the setting of a resistor connected between the output terminal and the adjust terminal. The output voltage (VOUT) then adjusts to maintain a constant current across the resistor.

The LM317LMX/NOPB also has a selectable output voltage range (VOUT1–VOUT2). By adjusting the output voltage range, the device can be used with either a positive or negative adapter and can be used with an unregulated input voltage. The input voltage range is typically 2.6 V to 8 V depending on the value of the output voltage range.

The LM317LMX/NOPB also features protection circuits such as under-voltage lockout (UVLO) and reverse current. UVLO protects the device from unstable input voltages and reverse current prevents current flow from the output back to the input. This protection capability ensures the LM317LMX/NOPB works reliably in many environment conditions.

The LM317LMX/NOPB can be used in a variety of applications such as DC-DC converters, AC-DC power supplies, voltage stabilizers, battery chargers, and switched-mode power supplies (SMPSs). It also has many built-in features and protection circuits that make it a versatile, cost-effective device suitable for a wide range of applications.
