Temperature sensors are widely used in multiple applications including manufacturing, quality assurance, chemical, and process industry, building climate, medical, aerospace and military applications, etc. Temperature sensors use two different types of outputs: analog and digital.

LM335M/NOPB is an analog output temperature sensor, and it operates over a wide temperature range from -40°C to +100°C. It is an exterior temperature sensing devices with a minimum Lag of 8 seconds, that provides a temperature independent output voltage that is linearly proportional to the Celsius (°C) temperature. It is used for high-precision temperature applications ranging from testing and calibration labs, industrial temperature control, medical equipment and home climate control.

Application Field

The LM335M/NOPB temperature sensor provides a linear output voltage that can be used in any way that the output voltage from a temperature probe can be used. The output voltage of LM335M/NOPB is proportional to the temperature and can be used directly to interface analog circuits and systems, as well as for temperature-controlled events such as switching, set-point control, and threshold settings.The output voltages from LM335M/NOPB can be calibrated in most circuits that are simple to use. It has an accuracy of ±0.5℃, which makes it an ideal choice of temperature sensors for many applications such as temperature measurement in hot and cold environment, heating and cooling, and thermoelectric applications. LM335M/NOPB is great for temperature measurements in industries such as food and beverage, automotive, and medical.

Working Principle

The LM335M/NOPB temperature sensor operates temprature independent and completely linear outputs, which is useful for measuring temperatures in the range of -40°C to +100°C. The output voltage is related to the sensing temperature by 10mV per 1°C. This precisely calibrated output voltage is independent of the supply voltage and the ambient operating temperature.

The LM335M/NOPB temperature sensor consists of a band gap based, precision voltage reference, temperature sensor, and an output amplifier. It uses a band gap reference to provide a precisely calibrated output voltage that corresponds to the current sensing temperature. The band gap reference is made from a diode that has an anode that is built from an intrinsic semiconductor junction material, which forms a predictable voltage when diode current is forced into reverse bias. This voltage remains constant even with changes in temperature.

The LM335M/NOPB also uses a temperature-sensitive negative temperature coefficient, or NTC thermistor, which responds to the temperature changes by increasing its resistance as the temperature decreases. This changes the currents such that the voltage output from the LM335M/NOPB changes linearly by 10mV/°C along with the temperature changes. The amplifier is used to amplify the thermistor current into a useable voltage output.

The LM335M/NOPB temperature sensor is done in a small 4-pin TO-92 package which makes it ideal for tight spaces. It has a low current drain, high temperature accuracy, and wide temperature range which makes it one of the most popular analog temperature sensors available today.
