Linear voltage regulators – including the LM3480IM3-15 device – are a type of voltage regulator that changes a larger input voltage to another value that is lower, usually by adjusting a linear output by means of a controlling element. These regulators are very popular in both commercial and industrial designs, and the LM3480IM3-15 device belongs to the Positive voltage regulators category of PMICs, particularly the Linear type.

It includes an output pass transistor that is connected in series between the output and the input of the device, with the base of the pass transistor connected to the regulator’s error amplifier output.

Under normal operation, an input voltage greater than the output voltage is supplied to the device. The error amplifier then adjusts the output voltage to be equal to the specified output voltage. Since the base of the pass transistor is connected to the error amplifier output, the current through the pass transistor is adjusted to maintain the required output voltage. As this current increases, more power is drawn from the input, ultimately the output voltage remains constant.

Moreover, the current source of the LM3480IM3-15 contains a NPN transistor in order to limit the load current to the pre-specified value. This feature helps protect the LM3480IM3-15 from excessive current, while still providing the optimal performance under normal operation conditions.

Besides the aforementioned features, the LM3480IM3-15 also offers protection circuits such as output short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown. The short-circuit protection prevents the output voltage from becoming abnormally low by shutting off the output pin. Meanwhile, the thermal shutdown feature helps prevent the device from overheating by switching it off in case of excessively high temperature.

Thus, the LM3480IM3-15 is a very important and powerful unit of PMIC that uses the classic series linear regulator design to provide a reliable and cost-efficient power supply solution. It provides stable performance under varying conditions, thanks to its constant output voltage with very low noise and its linear current limiting. In addition, the features for short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown can prevent it from malfunction or unsafe operation in extreme environment.
