Working Principle

The LM3485MMX is a DC-DC switching controller that operates utilizing a synchronous rectifying system. The internal error amplifier provides precise control of the output voltage by comparing the externally provided feedback voltage with the output voltage feedback voltage. The voltage reference provides a precise reference voltage used in the comparison. The internal high-side power switch and low-side power switch are driven by the comparator and N-channel MOSFET. The internal current-sense amplifier compares the voltage across the internal current sense resistor with the voltage reference to sense the current in the switch. The current sense amplifier also determines the average current in the switch.

When the current reaches a predefined level, an over-current protection circuit is enabled. The over-current protection circuit limits the current in the switch to predefined levels and allows the elimination of external current-sensing componentry. The device can also be used in power supply designs requiring a high level of precision without resorting to additional componentry.
