Temperature Sensors - Analog and Digital Output

Temperature sensing is a vital and important aspect of many applications. Often times, it is necessary to monitor and track temperature changes with accuracy and reliability to ensure that everything runs as it should. The LM34DMX/NOPB temperature sensor from Texas Instruments is one such device that offers both analog and digital temperature sensing capabilities for a variety of applications. The LM34DMX/NOPB combines a traditional slim-profile thermistor with multidrop-bus communication to create an adjustable, reliable, and successful temperature sensing solution. It also includes an integrated precision fixed reference, and operates with ±1°C accuracy between the -20 neg C to 70°C temperature range with a resolution of 0.25°C. This device is designed to be capable of withstanding harsh temperature conditions while providing a high degree of reliability and accuracy.The primary function of the device is to capture temperature changes with the designated thermistor in order to generate either an analog 0–5 VDC (LM34DMX) output or a 16-bit digital output via I2C serial data bus (LM34DMP). The thermistor, or thermally sensitive resistor, provides the current which is used to create the analog or digital output from the LM34DMX/NOPB.The working principle of the LM34DMX/NOPB is that a standard 20KΩ thermistor acts as a current source in order to generate a 2.5 mV/°C voltage signal across a 0.100 Ω resistor. This voltage signal is then amplified by means of a precision amplifier built into the device. That amplification is enabled by a precision reference voltage set at 1.25V. This reference voltage is then amplified according to the temperature changes from the thermistor. For the 16-bit digital output from the LM34DMP, the amplified signal is then converted by a successive approximation ADC (analog-to-digital converter) and sent as I2C-compatible serial digital data. This digital data can then be used in applications with further processing and control capabilities.The LM34DMX/NOPB is a small yet versatile temperature sensor that can be used for a range of applications. This versatile temperature measuring device offers the flexibility of using either analog or digital output for temperature sensing, meaning it can be adapted to fit many different projects across a wide range of industries.
