LM3743-1000EVAL is a new evaluation board designed to allow for evaluation of LM3743-1000 SMPS/AC/DC converter. The new board operates on a variety of switching frequencies up to 1.2MHz and provides a regulated, non-isolated output voltage of 5V. The evaluation board includes a variety of other features such as an adjustable output voltage, rugged components, an integrated power supply monitor, soft start capability, a full range of protection and simple software graphical user interface.

This evaluation board is suitable for a variety of applications such as automotive, consumer, industrial and medical markets. It provides designers with the flexibility to evaluate the performance of the new LM3743-1000 device in a wide range of power supplytopologies. In addition, the evaluation board provides a straightforward way to quickly become familiar with the LM3743-1000 device configuration and performance.

The LM3743-1000EVAL evaluation board is made up of two main components: the power stage and the control stage. The power stage consists of a 100V MOSFET (IRLML6401) in a full-bridge configuration, together with an inductor, capacitor and transformer. The control stage includes a PIC32MZ2048MC204 microcontroller, a LM3343 IC (Integrated Circuit) with its dedicated fault detect circuitry, a voltage regulator for the control supply, and the graphical user interface.

The operation principle of LM3743-1000EVAL evaluation board is based on a matter of switching and sensing key parameters. The power stage performs hard switching transitions between the AC input and DC output, whilst the control stage supervises switches states, supplies the control signals, and manages all the protection functions. The graphical user interface provides a comprehensive overview of the system parameters, enabling easy control.

To maximize the efficiency of the board, a boost topology is used to provide a very low output ripple and to reduce the switching losses. During the boost stage, the PIC MCU (Micro Controller Unit) constantly monitors the output voltage to ensure that it is within the expected range. If it does not match the 1V target value, the MCU will adjust the duty cycle to correct the situation.

The LM3743-1000EVAL is protected against a wide range of faults; from over current conditions to decreased input voltage. In the event of an unexpected current surge, the board will immediately shut down, and will not turn back on until the fault is corrected. In addition, the board has a built-in soft start feature which allows for gradual power up, reducing the need for heavy inrush currents and helping to protect the power supply components.
