Introduction
PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) is a device with multiple power management functions for controlling the power usage of electronic systems. It manages power system by monitoring and adjusting the supply voltage and current flow to ensure high reliability and performance of the system. Supervisors, as part of the PMIC, are designed to protect the system against accidental or malicious threats by monitoring its voltage levels. Among these supervisors, the LM3704XDMMX-463 is an advanced supervisor IC designed by Texas Instruments.LM3704XDMMX-463 Application Field and Working Principle
The LM3704XDMMX-463 employs a multiple fault monitoring system and offers an adjustable voltage supervision range by the external voltage divider. With maximum supply voltage of 5.5V, it can monitor any voltage between 0.5V to 5.4V. The board is small enough to fit in the space of a penny, and its wide operating temperature range from -40℃ to 85℃ allows it to be applied in almost any system.In addition, LM3704XDMMX-463 has high immunity from its electrostatic discharge (ESD) and transient fault protection. It has built-in low capacitance ESD circuitry to ensure its robustness in using environment. It also possesses a wide range of industrial standard events and signalling protocols to signal an engineering or system fault. On top of this, it features an on-chip distributed pFET device which can be used to shut down the system in the event of an over-voltage condition.On the principle side, LM3704XDMMX-463 functions as an adjustable voltage supervisor by monitoring its input voltage through two comparators. The first comparator (main comparator) is activated when the VIN voltage reaches the preset voltage level while the second (internal reset comparator) monitors voltage levels and compares the voltage level with VIN. The output of the main comparator is used to update the status of the supervisor device when a change in voltage is detected. Meanwhile, the internal reset comparator will reset the supervisor device if VIN drops below the predetermined voltage level. It also has an internal static latch that holds the reset signal on until the VIN voltage is restored and the supervisor is reactivated.Conclusion
