The LM6132AIN is a high performance, low cost, monolithic instrumentation amplifier that is designed for applications requiring low noise and low offset performance. This amplifier is composed of two high-precision differential amplifiers, an adjustable-gain multiplexer and an output amplifier. All this results in a number of advantages, such as low noise, low offset, wide gain range and adjustable gain.
This amplifier is commonly used in applications such as medical and process control instrumentation, telecommunication measurement and testing, automatic test equipment and audio systems. Because of its low cost, excellent accuracy over a wide temperature range and wide gain range, it is also used in high resolution data acquisition systems.
The working principle of the LM6132AIN amplifier is a combination of several precision resistors, MOS transistors and an adjustable four-quadrant multiplier. Those components make it possible to build a differential amplifier with null offset and low input voltage noise. The amplifier has an input bias current of 0.1mA max, an input impedance of 8.2k ohms and an operating temperature range of –40 to +85°C.
The input stage consists of an inverting and a non-inverting amplifier. Each one is currently controlled by several external resistors. The gain of the first stage varies from 200 to 800 by adjusting the external resistors. The inverting amplifier provides a gain of 1, while the non-inverting amplifier provides a gain of 2. The multiplication factor of the four-quadrant multiplier can be adjusted externally by changing the value of the resistance. The output stage has a unity gain buffer that provides a high output impedance, which ensures a wide range of load capacitance.
The output of the amplifier is connected to the adjustable gain multiplexed so that the signal can be routed to either the output buffer or the programmable gain amplifier. The output buffer provides a low output impedance and a large output signal swing. The signal from the output buffer is further amplified by a programmable gain amplifier with a gain of up to 50. This amplifier can also be used to adjust the signal strength or offset level by adjusting the gain.
