LM90EVAL Application Field and Working Principle

The LM90EVAL evaluation board is a versatile tool used to explore the performance and features of the LM90 family of temperature sensors. This evaluation board provides an easy way to evaluate the functionality and the performance of the LM90, as well as providing an opportunity to develop new applications relying on the sensor.The LM90EVAL is an evaluation board involving several temperature sensors including the ultra-low power, LM90 from Texas Instruments. This board provides the platform necessary to evaluate the accuracy of the temperature sensors and allows the user to explore a wide range of possibilities for data capture and processing. With the LM90EVAL, users can evaluate the temperature sensing characteristics of the LM90 sensor, and create applications using the LM90.The LM90EVAL evaluation board is composed of several subsystems, containing both analog and digital electronics. The analog subsystem consists of a temperature sensor (the LM90), a temperature reference precision IC and a voltage regulator (3.3V LDO). The reference IC maintains a constant voltage reference, and the voltage regulator provides a stable voltage source for the temperature sensor’s operation. The digital components of the board include a microcontroller, an on-board flash memory, and a USB port for connecting to a PC.The LM90 family of temperature sensors consists of four types: the LM90P, LM90A, LM90D, and LM90L. Each of these devices has a different operating range and accuracy spectrum. The LM90P is the standard accuracy type of the LM90 family and is capable of measuring temperatures from -55°C to 135°C (±0.5°C accuracy). The LM90D is the highest precision type and measures temperatures from -55°C to 105°C (±0.15°C accuracy). The LM90A is the intermediate accuracy type and measures temperatures from -50°C to 135°C (±0.3°C accuracy). The LM90L is the low power and low cost variant and measures temperatures from -55°C to 105°C (±0.75°C accuracy).The working principle of the LM90EVAL board is based on the operation of the LM90 temperature sensor. The sensor measures temperatures based on changes in Resistance (Ω/Q) vs. Temperature (R/T), which can be explained using the diode equation. In short, it states that the resistance of a diode can be related to temperature by the following equation:R = R0(1+αT)where R0 is the diode’s room temperature resistance, α is the temperature coefficient of the diode, and T is the absolute temperature in Kelvin.The LM90EVAL evaluation board uses this equation to correlate the temperature measurements from the LM90 temperature sensor to the proper analog output signal. The analog output signal is then used to drive an analog to digital converter (ADC), which converts the analog signal into a digital representation of the temperature measurement. The digital output of the ADC is then processed using software algorithms to determine the absolute temperature.The LM90EVAL board provides the user with an in-depth understanding of the LM90 temperature sensors and the necessary components to develop new applications that rely on temperature sensing.
