LM9036DTX-5.0 Application Field and Working Principle

The LM9036DTX-5.0 is a monolithic step-down DC-DC switching voltage regulator from National Semiconductor. It is a 3.3V output voltage regulator that supports both 0.7V to 6V input voltage range and 0.5A output current. This regulator operates in a continuous mode for smooth power output. It is designed to provide high efficiency and compact size.

Application

The LM9036DTX-5.0 switching voltage regulator is designed to use in a broad range of consumer electronic and automotive applications, such as DC-DC voltage conversion, battery charging, point-of-load applications and power conditioning. Additionally, this regulator can be incorporated in low-power, portable electronic devices, such as digital cameras, audio/video products, cellular phones, palmtop computers and MP3 players.

Working Principle

The LM9036DTX-5.0 switching voltage regulator operates by using a topology, called a "Buck Converter". This type of topology is the most popular one for step-down (also called "load-transforming") converters. A buck converter is an inductor-based DC-DC power converter, which is used to convert a higher voltage DC power supply to a lower voltage DC power supply, while also providing for current limiting and/or regulating. It is constructed from a voltage source, an inductor, a diode, a capacitor, and a load.

In a buck converter\'s steady-state operation, the output voltage is determined by the ratio of inductor current to the peak current. The peak current is established by the input voltage, the inductor value, and the output voltage. As the current in the inductor peaks, the voltage across the inductor increases and reaches a maximum, which occurs when the voltage drop across the diode is equal to the input voltage. The peak current times the inductance of the inductor gives an energy which is then discharged through the diode to the output.

In order to maintain a constant output voltage, the current must rise and fall in an exact manner proportionate to the inductance of the inductor and the output load. This is controlled by pulse-width modulation of the input voltage by the LM9036DTX-5.0 switching regulator. As the output current increases, the pulse-width must decrease in order to maintain a constant output voltage.

The LM9036DTX-5.0 switching regulator also provides for stable output voltage regulation and temperature compensation. A compensation block monitors the output voltage and provides an error signal to the PWM comparator in order to regulate the output voltage. The combined features of the LM9036DTX-5.0 switch provide for low noise, precise current and output voltage regulation as well as high efficiency.
