The LMC568CN is a high-precision, low-noise voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) used to generate a local oscillation frequency in a variety of applications. It is a specifically designed, monolithic integrated circuit that combines several elements such as precision BJTs, JFETs, active low-pass filters, and a very stable initial gain amplifier. The LMC568CN provides improved operating temperature range, better linearity, and better noise characteristics over previous generations of VCOs.

The LMC568CN is an ideal choice for frequency synthesizer applications, such as wireless communications, clock generators and timing systems. The frequency of the output waveform of the LMC568CN can be easily changed over a wide range by applying a control voltage to the input pin. The output waveform is the combination of outputs from the second harmonic, third harmonic and fundamental, thereby providing a frequency spectrum with multiple harmonics without any distortion.

The main advantage of this parameterized VCO is that it does not have the usual frequency-pulling problem for large steps, so the output frequency can be adjusted continuously by using the control voltage.The LMC568CN is tailored to work with a wide range of control voltage frequency ranges, typically 1 Hz to 10 MHz, and is suitable for any application requiring a low noise and/or a wide frequency range. In contrast to conventional oscillators, the LMC568CN operates with a very high power supply rejection ratio and a wide temperature compensation range.

The LMC568CN consists of a buffer amplifier, an active low-pass filter, a voltage-controlled oscillator, and a mode selection logic. The buffer amplifier converts the input signal to the logic levels of the VCO. The active low-pass filter attenuates undesirable high frequency components of the input signal. The output of the low-pass filter is connected to the control input of the VCO.The VCO then generates an output signal whose frequency is dependent on the input voltage. The output of the VCO is then fed to the mode selection logic. This logic converts the square waveform output from the VCO to the desired signal form, typically a sine wave.
