The LMS3655MQEVM is a high-performance evaluation module (EVM) designed to help power engineers evaluate the design, operation, and performance of the LMS3655M Power Factor Correction (PFC) controller. The EVM includes LMS3655M Power Factor Corrector Controllers, two bipolar NPN power transistors, universal input power supply, level-shifting network and open-drain SPI control. The EVM enables a simple design to demonstrate the LMS3655M PFC performance and validate its features.
The LMS3655MQEVM is designed to use in DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) SMPS as the PFC pre-stage (typically in quasi-resonant SMPS) incorporating the LMS3655M controller. The LMS3655M helps reduce system costs by providing no-load and light-load energy savings, as well as simple board design and easy debugging of complex issues. It also provides more tolerant start-up behavior, compared to high-voltage diode rectifier circuits.
The LMS3655M PFC pre-stage is optimized for performance and simplicity. To ease the system transition among different operating modes, the controller dynamically adjusts the duty cycle to maintain the two dominant terms of the input power factor: a) the input active power objective and b) the input active to reactive power angle. The LMS3655M provides internal line compensation, eliminating the need for additional active line compensation circuits. The controller also provides current-mode control, enabling fast loop response and minimizing the possibility of resetting the output voltage in the event of an output over-voltage condition.
The working principle of the LMS3655MQEVM is based on a quasi-resonant power stage, with the power level controlled by the constant voltage, constant current (CV/CC) characteristic. The power stage utilizes two bipolar NPN transistors (Q1 and Q2) operating in a bridge configuration, driven by the LMS3655M device. In the design, the LMS3655M PFC controller is the main component responsible for setting the peak current, quenching the inrush current, controlling the current and voltage, and transient response. The PFC controller dynamically determines the switching period to maintain a constant input power factor. It also monitors the power factor, the input line voltage, the peak current, the output voltage, and the quasi-resonant variation.
The LMS3655MQEVM is an ideal solution to add power factor correction to a wide range of DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) SMPS designs. Its highly optimized power stage reduces board requirements, while its advanced PFC controller provides precise control over the power factor, with excellent protection against overload, over-voltage, inrush current, and line-imbalance. Additionally, its universal input power supply makes this product suitable for operations from 115V to 277V, making it an ideal fit in any industry.
