The LMX2370TMX is a family of low-jitter, wide range, high performance Digital Frequency Synthesizers (DFS) for the Clock / Timing space that help solve today\'s timing and synchronization design challenges.

The LMX2370TMX is well suited to applications such as communications infrastructure, optical networking, data storage, storage area networking, and test & measurement. Valuable features of this family include multiply/divide capabilities, up to 7.8 GHz operation, configured via a serial port, dual outputs, fast frequency switching, holdover capability, wide loop-bandwidth options, and auto-calibration of loop filter elements.

The LMX2370TMX family provides best-in-class flexibility and performance. All outputs are programmable in wide range (3 kHz to 7.8 GHz), and the family is designed to take advantage of a wide range of applications in the Clock/Timing space – from ARM-based products that need an embedded synthesizer to general purpose products that require small integrated package size, such as small form factor pluggable transceivers that need small die size and low cost.

The core of the LMX2370TMX is a dual-frequency state-of-the-art phase-locked loop (PLL) device. It provides frequency generation, phase synchronization, and timing/clocking features. The electrical structure of the PLL is composed of a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), a frequency divider (divider), a phase detector (PD), and a low-pass filter (LPF) connected in a loop. To increase the performance of the PLL, some external components like the loop filter and loop amplifier are used. In addition, some active devices such as amplifier and voltage clamp are used to provide gain, frequency control, and input protection.

The PLL of the LMX2370TMX is designed to provide low jitter (1 ps RMS typ) and high bandwidth (200 MHz max) clock/timing signals for critical timing applications. The PLL is designed to have a wide capture range (10:1 min) and locking time under 10 microseconds. The clock/timing signal is generated by a divide-by-N Counter and controlled by a Digital-to-Analog Converter. The N Counter is configured with the frequency selection of the synthesizer and the VCO is tuned to the desired clock frequency.
