The LMX2492RTWR is a programmable, high precision, low phase noise, low power Clock/Timing generator. It covers output clock frequencies ranging from 10 to 1250MHz and supports various output formats. The device features integrated, automatic frequency control functionality and advanced loop parameters to provide a highly integrated, flexible solution.

The LMX2492RTWR is suitable for a variety of Clock/Timing needs in applications such as wireless communications, datacom, video and industrial. Additional features include frequency sweep, triangular sweep, start/stop sweep and step sweep mode, both internally and externally triggered.

Application Fields

The LMX2492RTWR has a wide range of clock/timing application fields, but the most common application areas are wireless communications, datacom, video, and industrial. In wireless communications, the LMX2492RTWR is ideal for applications such as cellular base stations, which require low phase noise signals. For datacom applications the device is well suited for high-speed clock and data recovery (CDR) and fibre channel applications. Video applications include digital cinema and HDTV broadcasting, where the LMX2492RTWR provides low jitter and low phase noise signals. In industrial applications, such as test and measurement equipment, the LMX2492RTWR offers jitter performance, wide range frequency input/output and low power consumption.

Working Principle

The LMX2492RTWR is based on a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) with a digitally controlled loop filter. This provides on chip programmable loop parameters, including loop bandwidth and output clock frequency, which can be changed via the use of external or internal registers. The internal register allows for frequency changes to be adjusted on the fly, as well as start/stop/step sweep running in triangles, linear or polynomial sweep mode.

The LMX2492RTWR has a wide range of frequency accuracy and jitter performance, depending on the frequency of operation. It supports a frequency output range from 10 to 1250MHz, and the low phase noise performance can be as low as -100dBc/Hz, with a loop bandwidth adjustable from 0.2kHz to 200kHz. The device also has a wide range of supported output formats, including CMOS, HCSL, LVDS, and LVPECL, to cover the various requirements of clocks and data paths in communications, datacom, video, and industrial applications.

To provide compact solutions and easy integration, the LMX2492RTWR comes in a small 8-pin plastic QFN package. It has an extremely low quiescent current of 0.7mA and a very low power consumption of 3.3mW at 12MHz, making it one of the best choices in terms of efficiency.
