Working Principle
Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors are comprised of aluminum foil as the anode, electrolytic paper soaked with electrolytic solution as the separator, and metalized aluminum as the cathode. When a voltage is applied between the two terminals, an extremely thin layer of oxide forms at the anode which stores electrical energy. The oxide layer is very stable and acts as an insulating medium which prevents a direct current from flowing between the two terminals. The thicker the oxide layer, the greater the capacity of the capacitor. In order for the capacitor to function, a leakage current must pass through the oxide layer which will reduce the capacitance.
The most common operating principle for the LNC2V222MTEF aluminum electrolytic capacitor is that of a negative temperature coefficient (NTC). In this mode, the NTC mechanism prevents overcharging by reducing the capacitance as the temperature rises. As the temperature increases, the electrolyte inside the capacitor expands, reducing the thickness of the oxide layer. This reduces the capacitance of the capacitor, which in turn reduces the charge and voltage across the terminals.
The LNC2V222MTEF is also equipped with an overload protection and self-healing process, preventing the capacitor from being damaged during severe overloads. This is achieved by using a temperature-sensitive element and a thermistor that will prevent further current from flowing if the temperature exceeds the rated value.
