The Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) LNK606DG is a cost-effective solution ideal for off-line application. It is a synchronous rectification ac-dc converter with integrated lowside and highside switches. The converter is designed to provide a low component count and low standby power with high performance and high efficiency. The device incorporates Green Mode function which helps in achieving very low stand-by power which is a added advantage for end applications. The device includes high and lowside integrated MOSFETs, current sense, HV start-up, voltage regulation and various protection circuits.
The LNK606DG integrates all of the major components associated with a true AC/DC conversion policy in a single component. Thus it provides an important cost-saving and power advantages. The key components which are included are: high side and low side half-bridge MOSFETs; Driver/Sensing circuit; Voltage regulation/feedback control circuit; Start-up circuit; Frequency jitter circuit; Protection circuit; Voltage coupling technology; Full-wave rectifier circuit; Transformer and power supply part. All these components make up the basic circuitry necessary for efficient and reliable AC/DC conversion.
The drive/sensing circuit of the LNK606DG drives the high side and low side switches of the half-bridge MOSFETs with alternating current (AC). The high side switch drives the primary of the off-line transformer which steps up the AC voltage and also feeds it to the rectifier which provides power at the output of the IC. The main functions of the sensing circuit are to detect the DC output voltage level and adjust the duty cycle of the drive switches to maintain the output voltage level.
The voltage regulation/feedback control circuit of the LNK606DG adjusts the feedback voltage on the output side to match the regulated voltage. This regulated voltage is then compared to the actual output voltage in order to determine the change in duty cycle needed to maintain the output voltage. If a deviation is found then the duty cycle of the high side switch is adjusted to compensate.
The start-up circuit is responsible for providing the necessary current during start-up. This current also serves to bring the output voltage to the desired level. The frequency jitter circuit is used to reduce the noise generated by the devices. This helps to improve the reliability of the device.
The protection circuit is the last component of the LNK606DG and it is used to protect the device from over current. The main components of this circuit are the under voltage lockout , current limiter, over voltage protection and temperature limiter. These components are used to detect any fault conditions and take corrective action to prevent the possibility of damage. The LNK606DG also includes a voltage coupling technology which helps to reduce the noise generated by the devices.
