The LNK613PG is a CMOS based, low cost, fixed-frequency, current mode, off-line switcher with secondary side control. As part of the PMIC – AC DC Converters, Offline Switchers family of parts, it is primarily designed to replace operating relays with a single power component. It is designed to drive an N-channel MOSFET switch with a maximum duty cycle of 50% and an internal current limiter that cycles the device on each cycle of the internal oscillator. The primary application is the cost-effective implementation of single ended AC/DC or DC/DC power supplies with power levels up to 15 W.

The LNK613PG is a device that provides a flyback power converter with fixed-frequency, current mode. It features burst mode operation for improved efficiency at light loads and can be operated with a minimum operating frequency of 25 kHz enabling enhanced power density. A 200:1 frequency range of 25 kHz to 5 kHz is available in fixed frequency applications to extend the efficiency range. It exhibits very wide input voltage range of 85 to 265 Vac and provides secondary side control which means that no optocoupler is needed. The LNK613PG also provides a comprehensive SMPS protection including over-voltage protection, over-temperature protection and auto-restart.

The internal 500 V sense FET controls the output voltage set externally by two resistors. During operation, the primary current flowing through the switching device is sensed by a peak current detection circuit and compared to an internally programmed current sense voltage; this voltage is set externally by three resistors. This detected current is then compared to the peak setting, or PkS and when the peak voltage is detected, the output voltage is reduced by a predicted amount, stopping the voltage from exceeding the set peak voltage.

The operation of the LNK613PG can be divided into two distinct phases. During the ON-time, the MOSFET switch is activated, allowing current to flow from the input to the primary winding of the transformer. During the OFF-time, the MOSFET is switched off, and the magnetization current, which is stored in the magnetic core of the transformer, is released and the voltage across the output diode is measured. After the OFF-time, the new cycle begins and this is repeated at the fixed frequency of the device.

With its compact package and small size, it fits into most standard SMPS applications and is suitable for a wide range of consumer and commercial use cases.
