An aluminum electrolytic capacitor, also known as an electrolytic capacitor, an aluminum electrochemical capacitor, or an aluminum capacitor, is a type of capacitor that utilizes an aluminum foil as the one of the layers of a plate capacitor along with a dielectric material to store electrical energy and charge.

The other layer includes a material with a high electrical conductivity like a thin oxide layer formed by an electrolytic process. This entire device is then sealed with a potting material inside a robust, sealed and leak-proof metal housing. As a result, the device can bear a huge amount of charge providing a very high capacitance.

The LNT1V334MSEN aluminum electrolytic capacitor is a type of polarized capacitor primarily used for power supply filtering, as well as coupling and blocking purposes. Available in a wide range of capacitances, from 4.7uF to 8200uF, it operates between a voltage range of -25VDC to +450VDC. It also features a low equivalent series resistance (ESR) which makes it suitable for decoupling and bypassing applications when used in filters and AC/DC converters, and for bulk energy storage.

The working principle of such an aluminum electrolytic capacitor relies on an aluminum anode as one of the capacitor’s plates with an oxide layer produced electrolytically on it. The oxide layer functions as electrolyte and dielectric medium. The electrolyte enables the device’s ions to move through the oxide layer when the capacitor is activated and a voltage is supplied.

When the voltage is applied, a positive charge accumulates on the oxide layer of the anode and negative charge accumulates on the cathode, resulting in an electric field being built between the anode and the cathode and thus causing the capacitor to store the electrical energy.
