Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are electronic components that are composed of thin aluminum foil and aluminum oxide film as their electrodes. It is a kind of “polarized capacitor”, which has polarity, negative pole and positive pole. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors can bear higher voltage and large electric capacity. The electric capacity of this kind of capacitor is mainly determined by the capacitance of its aluminum oxide film. In contrast, solid electrolytic capacitors can bear higher temperature and provide larger electric capacity.

LNT1V473MSEN Application Field and Working Principle

LNT1V473MSEN is a cylindrical aluminum electrolytic capacitor, which is mainly used in small power supply output filter of signal system. With a rated voltage of 63V and a capacitance of 470uF, the capacitor can be connected in series to extend its voltage or connected in parallel to increase its capacity. Additionally, the capacitor has an excellent leakage current performance. It features a radial leaded construction with voltage derating and self-healing.

The working principle of LNT1V473MSEN aluminum electrolytic capacitor is similar to that of other types. It is composed of anode and cathode, liquid electrolyte and aluminum oxide. When connected to an alternating current, the anode of the capacitor will adsorb positively charged ions, and generate a negative electric charge. Likewise, the cathode side of the capacitor will release positive ions, and generate a positive electric charge. The two charges on the two sides create an electric field, just like two plates of a capacitor, which can accumulate and store electric energy.

LNT1V473MSEN aluminum electrolytic capacitor adopts aluminum foil as its anode, and oxidized aluminum as its cathode material. Between the anode and the cathode, there is a dielectric layer composed of aluminum oxide. The thickness of the aluminum oxide film determines the capacitance of the capacitor. Moreover, the capacitor is filled with an electrolyte that often contains an ammonium compound. The electrolyte solutions can provide a better conduction of electric field and help to establish an electrochemical reaction which can form the dielectric in the capacitor.

In fact, the aluminum electrolytic capacitor can reduce the noise in small power supply. Using the principle of capacitive reactance, it can lower the reverse current of AC when the capacitor is connected in series. This effect helps reduce disturbance such as noise, voltage fluctuation and short circuit, thus protecting the circuit. As LNT1V473MSEN aluminum electrolytic capacitor has low resistance, it can be easily connected in series to extend voltage or in parallel to increase capacitance, which makes it more suitable for high-frequency circuits in small power supply.
