Working Principle

When the voltage across the terminals of the capacitor is applied, the surface of the negative electrode is polarized and the ions of the electrolyte are attracted to it. A thin layer of positive ions form on the surface of the metal plates. This accumulation of positive ions makes that layer more conductive which completes the circuit.

In the case of a capacitor, the capacitance is determined by the ratio of the plated area to the intervening dielectric. The size of the capacitor changes its capacitance, with a larger capacitor providing higher capacitance. As current passes through the capacitor, energy is stored in a 25 - 50 microsecond window, providing the necessary power for the duration.
