Evaluation Boards - LED Drivers
The LP55231SQEVM is a full-featured, system-level evaluation module (EVM) for Texas Instruments LP55231 - a 9-channel, constant-current LED driver with an I2C interface. It provides evaluation and development capabilities for applications related to the LP55231, such as medical patient monitoring, automotive interior lighting, signage, general illumination, and home appliances.
The LP55231SQEVM contains nine LED channels, each of which is powered by its own LP55231 LED driver. Three red, two green, two blue, and two white channels are provided to drive LEDs. The EVM includes a DC power supply, enabling up to 500 mA of total LED current with an adjustable output voltage range of 10 to 24 V. The board also contains a 6-pin expansion connector enabling additional current to be applied to the LED channels.
Through its I2C interface, the LP55231SQEVM can be used to test and develop the LP55231’s various LED-driving techniques including LED engine programming, LED fault detection, I2C communication, LED pulse-width modulation (PWM), and LED constant current regulation. Built-in, factory-programmed LED engines provide a platform for experimenting with ideas for implementing dynamic LED lighting effects. Also integrated into the board is a debugger providing visual feedback of the LP55231 operation.
The LP55231 operates by using proprietary Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) waveforms and six independent, temperature-controlled constant current outputs. The operating temperature range is -40°C to +85°C. It has nine 32 mA individually addressable LEDs and three external resistors, one of which is optional, to reduce the time for the current matching of up to nine LEDs. Additionally, various setting functions such as switching mode and setting data can be set by I2C communication.
The integrated LP55231 LED driver provides a maximum output current of 32mA for each of the nine channels. Additionally, each LED channel can be individually configured with regards to its output current and driving type (constant current with 1-bit override or PWM) control via the integrated I2C interface. In addition to LED current control, the LP55231 includes several features, such as LED fault detection, LED engine programming, and PWM control.
The LP55231SQEVM includes three red, two green, two blue, and two white LEDs plus a debugger that provides visual feedback of LP55231 operation. Core components of the board include an I2C interface to control the LP55231 and LP5231’s operation, a 20 pin header for debug and system control, and a 9-channel LED array to drive the 9 LEDs on the board. The integral power supply for LP55231 enables up to 500mA output current with adjustable output voltage range from 10 to 24V.
By providing the LP55231 debugging capabilities from the integrated debugger, the LP55231SQEVM offers a set of essential system-level evaluation and development capabilities for various applications. Generally, its outdoor use under direct sunlight requires high power LEDs with high current constant current driving, and these requirements can be fulfilled using the LP55231. It is applicable for medical patient monitoring, automotive interior lighting, signage, general illumination, and home appliances.
